Set of 7 Iconic Dakota Jackson Vik-Ter chairs in Eggplant.
The Vik-Ter Chair holds a legendary status in the design community due to a perfect storm of technical innovation, historical timing, and distinct geometry. It has Biomorphic & Postmodern (Memphis Style) Geometry: Visually, the chair is striking for its interplay of sharp and organic lines. It features a slender, black welded-steel frame, a wide trapezoidal seat, and a distinctive, gently arcing circular backrest. It was prized for its award-winning sustainability long before green design became a standard industry requirement. This focus earned it the prestigious Silver Award for Environmental Design at the 1992 Industrial Design Excellence Awards. It has a museum-grade legacy: The design bridged the gap between commercial contract furniture and high art. It was so rapidly recognized for its impact on American design that it was immediately acquired into the permanent collections of institutions like the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.
The frames are constructed from slender, curving welded steel rods (often described in vintage catalogs as black iron or steel) that is finished in a signature matte black lacquer or powder coat, which creates a sharp, graphic contrast against the eggplant plywood components. Rather than using standard straight vertical legs, Jackson designed the rear legs to bow slightly outward as they extend to the floor. This gives the chair a dynamic, insect-like "biomorphic" stance that makes it look as if it is actively balancing or poised to move. Despite looking incredibly delicate and thin, the frames are remarkably robust. They utilize a cross-stretcher system beneath the trapezoidal seat to distribute weight efficiently. This engineering allowed the chairs to remain structurally sound over decades of use without requiring bulky metal supports.
This set came to use from a collector but it was frequently used so there are flaws; mostly to the lovely eggplant finish (scratches with missing finish and scuffs). Despite those imperfections, the set is still extremely solid. It does not retain its original paper tags so this set is technically unmarked.
