Lovely and large pair of chinoiserie art pieces on wood board. The images of the emperor and empress are somewhat two dimensional. I was told they were carved out of soapstone and then hand painted...but I am not sure it is soapstone. They have amazing detail. They are impressive in size. 30"W x 48"H (that's the dimension of the frame - the brass hardware at the top extends another 1.5"). The frames are 1.25"D. They are on a matte black background with a gilded design that borders the rosewood frame. They each have two decorative brass mounts at the top of the frame.
They are in very good condition. The emperor has some minor loss to the carving (see close up image).
