Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted).

Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva. He died at barely age 50, cutting short a promising career. In 1990 when Ecole de Paris paintings enjoyed an unprecedented popularity at auction, his works achieved prices as high as $82,000, with many exceeding $20,000. Nothing less than 37 American museums possess and exhibit his works, as well as those of the Vatican in Rome, Modern Art of Paris, Calvet in Avignon and Santiago de Chile.<br This painting was one of many owned by a couple in the Chicago area that were close friends of Noyer and his wife. They often stayed with them in France.

Philippe Henri Noyer was born on June 28, 1917 in Lyon, France. After a traditional education at the elite Ecole des Roches, Noyer enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon. He eventually moved to Paris, where he discovered his talent for oil painting, officially starting his painting career in 1943. In the sixties, Noyer put aside portraiture in favor of painting delicately stylized, sophisticated, slim, long-limbed ladies who were his favorite subject. This painting is a fine example of that style. Throughout his career, Philippe Noyer's art has always remained quite unique. Modernist yet slightly Surrealist, he compensated for the rigor of his method by the remarkable freedom of his subjects. The elements Noyer uses in his paintings - the women, the monuments, the animals and the flowers - come alive under the brush which translates them in strictly realist terms in compositions that are the fruits of his fantasy and intellectual or literary reminiscences.

Dimensions: 46.5" W x 46.5" H x 2.25"D

If you need this work shipped, please contact us for a shipping quote. A specialized shipping box would be required and that alone costs $350.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0076/1567/6475/files/0E071939-2930-4710-8DE1-38E1D9321C73_1_105_c.jpg?v=1720549580
mid-century-curved-sectional-attributed-to-vladimir-kagan-for-weiman-furniture
Mid-Century Curved Sectional attributed to Vladimir Kagan for Weiman Furniture

Absolutely stunning curved sectional sofa attributed to Vladimir Kagan for Weiman Furniture. This sofa was upholstered in a stunning neutral faux snakeskin fabric that is in great condition (it looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor). There are no labels present but the previous owner purchased it via their Interior Designer from the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

The upholstery has an off-white field with taupe (and some small gold accents).

This is a true statement piece. It looks as modern today as it did when it was purchased (decades ago) and it will look great for years to come.

The sofa is in four sections (that can be locked together on the underside of the frames).

You'll see similar sofas on 1st Dibs for $18,000 and up. This stunning piece is ready for placement today.

Approximate measurements are shown in the image gallery.

Stunning "Shang Ti" side table in patinated and engraved bronze and pewter with vibrant enamel cloisonne in blues and greens on sculptured bronze bamboo bases by Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, American 1960s (signed “Philip Kelvin LaVerne“ on top).
