This book contains approximately 435 life-size paintings of indigenous birds of America. Stangl began marketing these figurines at the start of World War II where they became an instant success due to the fact that European and Japanese porcelains were basically not available for export. The factory discontinued the Stangl Birds line in 1955. During their run, each example was hand-painted prior to firing so similar figurines tend to look somewhat different in the coloring. A vast majority of the figurines have the standard company mark, individual figurine number as well as often the mark of the decorator visible on the bottoms. One popular birds produced was the hummingbird; the company produced renditions of at least a half dozen different species all with distinct numbers.

The hummingbird with his beak in the flower is #3626 - also known as the broadtail hummingbird. It measures 5.5" L x 5.75" T x 3.5"W.

The other is known as the Rieffer’s hummingbird no 3628.
