Baker Furniture

Founded in 1890, just outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Baker Furniture started as a woodworking and door company. Siebe Baker, who immigrated from the Netherlands, made his first piece of furniture just three years later. The door company rather quickly became a leader and trendsetter for the US furniture market.

In 1925, Baker launched its “Twentieth Century Shop” and introduced Art deco pieces. By 1932
they had featured collections designed by Donald Deskey, Joseph Urban and Kem Weber. It was Baker that introduced Americans to the Modern movement.

In 1941 Baker introduced it’s Far East Collection, designed by Michael Taylor. Far East was the first Asian inspired furniture collection to be manufactured in the Unites States. In 1950, they introduced Italian Neoclassical furniture with their Palladian collection. Then in 1951 they partnered with Finn Juhl to introduce Danish modern designs to the US market. By 1959 they expanded with the acquisition of the Grand Rapids Chair Company. That acquisition lead to the
introduction of furniture under the Milling Road label.

In 1961, Hollis Baker, Siebe’s son, became president of the company. In the years that followed, many new collections were released, especially for the luxury markets. They introduced English country and French Provincial furniture lines. In 1972 they entered the upholstery business and
added a plant in High Point, NC.

Baker continued to add collections by well-known designers. In the 1980’s they partnered with Alessandro Gambrielli Gambalogna to launch the Alessandro A. collection. In 1984 they worked with John Saladino on the Facade Collection. The late 1980’s brought about the McMillen Collection and the Charles Pfister Collections. In 1996 they launched the Barry Barry Collection, one that is reminiscent of 1930’s Hollywood glamour.

Since 2000 Baker has continued to partner with extraordinary designers to bring beautiful new collections to market. The breadth and the beauty of Baker furniture is incomparable.
