Mastercraft

Posted on August 07 2018

The first time you come across a fine piece of Mastercraft furniture, you immediately recognize that it is the “glitzy and over-the-top” relative of the mid century makers. Mastercraft’s most recognized pieces are it’s brass and glass works that were widely popular in the 1970’s…..and still look incredibly fresh today.

One of the many fine furniture companies that hailed from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mastercraft’s founders, the Doezema brothers, came from a long line of cabinetmakers. While serving overseas in WWII, they fell in love with cosmopolitan European furniture. When they returned home they dedicated their lives to making furniture with a modern
European flair.

Many of their pieces were made with exotic woods and trimmed in brass. In later years they used glass and brass more widely - often incorporating flowers, birds or figures that resembled Chinese characters. With the gleam of brass and the reflection of glass, a
Mastercraft piece is certain to add a bit of cosmopolitan “glam” to any room.

Mastercraft was acquired by furniture giant Baker in 1974.

At StudioSonjaMilan we have several beautiful Mastercraft pieces available, including my absolute favorite - a brass wrapped cabinet with gorgeous Chinese characters for pulls. It is truly a showstopper.
